Stress Greatly Increases Obesity Risk and Poor Results

Unless you regularly read Journal Articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, you probably still believe the relationship with food you were taught in school–the one that is most commonly believed.

If you eat more than you should (calorie wise) when you’re not stressed, your body is more capable of dealing with it and maintaining your weight than if you eat the exact same food when you are stressed. Stress reduces your body to respond to food in healthy ways. Over time, chronic stress can lead to diabetes and other digestive problems.

The same findings have been found in relationship to exercise. When you feel good and you exercise, it does you more good than when you are stressed and exercise.

What we eat changes based on how stressed we are. People are far more likely to choose unhealthy foods when they are stressed–even when they know what they should eat to be healthy and even when they have weight loss goals.

Stress interferes with our ability to stick to our goals.

How do you know if you’re stressed?

Stress and happiness have an inverse relationship. Increased stress equals reduced happiness. Increased happiness equals reduced stress. If you’re not feeling a lot of positive emotion every day, you’re stressed. If you are frequently frustrated, jealous, envious, irritable, angry, depressed, or other emotions that feel worse than hopeful, you’re experiencing chronic stress. The amount is a matter of degree, but the research shows that stress has an immediate negative effect on your digestive, immune, cognitive and central nervous system function that, over time, leads to many chronic diseases.

Olympic Gold Mindset

It is so wonderful listening to the mindset of the Gold Medal winners.

Listening to their words it is affirming to recognize the way they think as the way we teach people to think in our classes. While we have not yet trained an Olympic athlete, the techniques we provide can bring great success to anyone who applies them to their dreams and desires.

Our techniques are based upon research that is solid and the results we see are clearly working for our student from the perspective of the help they receive and their ability to live more rewarding lives. I suppose the reason listening to the winning Olympic athletes thoughts and seeing how closely their thought processes emulate what we teach is because even though we have known that we offer great value there is always a desire to do the best one possibly can do. Listening to winning Olympic athletes utter words that we would expect from our students affirms that we are teaching the same sort of mindset that brings athletes to victory on the world stage.

Winning at that level requires far more than physical prowess; it requires mental acuity and stamina. A “can do” mindset that does not easily give up is essential. The same requirements exist in all pursuits. To win at the top levels requires more than skill — the thought process an individual employees has a tremendous impact on the results they achieve. A dream is insufficient to propel one to the top of their game. A dream must be supported by a mindset that believes in the possibility of that dream — a mindset that looks for opportunities to succeed instead of reasons to fail.

For many, the right mindset is not their “default mode”. Whether they were born less optimistic than they could be or trained to be that way by well-meaning but mis-guided adults is not relevant. What is relevant is that greater optimism can be learned and it provides great advantages to those who deliberately cultivate it. Increasing ones level of optimism is not difficult but it is also not easy for someone whose brain has been trained to be otherwise. The right knowledge and tools are required to make the change successfully.

Do you have the mindset required to do your best?  Do you have the mindset required to successfully compete on the world stage in your chosen field?  What is it worth to you to have that power available to you?  What would it take to make you feel capable of not only meeting the challenges but also of exceeding your expectations in a high-profile venue?

The Real Solution to Undesired Behaviors

Why I don’t focus on helping one group 

The knowledge I’ve gained in my journey has benefits that can be applied in so many ways.  I think the ways are actually endless.

My work might  appeal to more people if I structured the programs with narrower names or missions.

There are many programs that grab attention because they are aimed at helping “Politically Correct” groups. Programs designed to help women and/or girls. Programs designed to help the economically disadvantaged or other groups—there are too many sub-groups to even begin listing them.

But every time I see something that focuses on one group, it feels to me as if they are pushing against other groups.

I just saw what looked like a fantastic program to help women and girls but within the description it spoke about a program to help boys and men learn not to treat women and girls badly.

At its essence, it is divisive. It feels “off” to me.

It does not recognize that someone who mistreats another is unhappy. If that person were happier, they would not do as they are doing. Behavior is tied to emotional stance and no amount of education about “proper” behavior will change that basic truth. When we address the root–the emotional state–we will see the progress we seek.

The solutions to all social problems is a better world for all.

The person who mistreats another is not someone who is in an emotionally good state of mind.

If someone is being a bully they are in emotional pain. They would not treat another that way if they were in a good emotional state of mind.

For anyone who feels good emotionally it feels worse to treat another poorly. But when someone feels emotionally bad, especially if they feel powerless, they can feel somewhat better by asserting power over another. It is not the preferred path to feeling better and it will never take anyone all the way to joy, but it can offer relief from a totally powerless state of mind. We need to understand this, as a society, a world society, and give the knowledge and tools to all.

We need to give both the aggressors and the victims tools to move from low and powerless feeling emotional states to more empowered states of mind. Knowledge and tools that allow them to move in the direction of feeling better in socially acceptable ways is the solution will solve the problem.

Continuing to create divisiveness is not the solution. It may bring temporary ease to many who need it but it will not eliminate the problem. We could be giving permanent solutions with the same resources.
