Book Recommendations

Many of the strategies taught by Happiness 1st Institute are available in Dr. Jeanine Joy’s books:

Stress Management and Emotion Regulation

Buy this book if you want the most recent strategies for stress management, emotion regulation, and social and emotional learning skills. The skills in this book help you reduce chronic stress and face life feeling more confident and empowered. This book has strategies that can save troubled relationships, too. Most relationship difficulties begin with chronic stress.

Originally published under the title, Mental Health Made Easy, the title was changed because mental health stigma made people uncomfortable reading a book with that title.

Mental Wellness Made Easy: The Smart Way to Manage Stress: Emotion Regulation and Stress Management for Everyone

Building Resilience

If you want to be ready for life in ways that make the ups and downs something you ride the way an expert surfer rides a wave, this book provides the skills you need.

Harness the Power of Resilience: Be Ready for Life

Burnout Prevention and Recovery

This book is written both for individuals who work in high-stress occupations like health care, law enforcement, call centers, teachers, hospitality, etc. and for their HR departments and managers. It contains strategies individuals can apply to handle the stress better and strategies organizations can apply to reduce stressors and support employees to reduce burnout.

Burnout: Prevention and Recovery, Resilience and Retention, Evidence-based, experience-informed, root cause solutions

Suicide Prevention

This book details risk factors and warning signs of suicide and strategies that have successfully prevented imminent suicides and others that reduce the likelihood that someone will become suicidal.

Prevent Suicide: The Smart Way, Transformative Empowering Processes Provide A Better Way to Prevent Suicide

Employee Engagement

This book is based on my dissertation. It is a different approach to improving employee engagement–one based on scientific studies. It also discusses why the strategies used by the major trainers in this area haven’t managed to move the needly in over a decade. Employee Engagement is at a very unhealthy 30%. We can do better.

Empowered Employees become Engaged Employees: Using Science to Solve the Employee Engagement Crisis, The Smart Way: Applied Positive Psychology in Action

Social and Emotional Learning Skills for Children, Parents, and Teachers

This book was written because I was (and remain) angry that we have solutions proven to work in longitudinal research studies and aren’t applying them. As a society, we are sitting back and allowing 2/3 of the at-risk children to end up dead, addicted, or in prison. That’s unacceptable to me. It is why I wrote this book and it is one of the main reasons for the Joy Walk. I can’t sit idly by, knowing there are solutions, and not do anything. This book details the science that shows us the way and it provides strategies that parents and teachers can apply to be part of the solution now.

Rescue Our Children from the War Zone: Teach Social and Emotional Skills to Improve Their Lives: Applied Positive Psychology 2.1

Primary Prevention of Physical Illnesses and Diseases

This was my first full book. I was published in a peer-reviewed book on coping and resilience before this one. This details the connection between stress and health. If you want to understand that connection, this book will help. If you want to learn strategies that reduce chronic stress, my newer book Mental Wellness Made Easy: The Smart Way to Manage Stress: Emotion Regulation and Stress Management for Everyone is more recent and structured like a combination book/workbook.

True Prevention–Optimum Health: Remember Galileo

A New Paradigm for Criminal Justice

This book points to the fact that reforming the current criminal justice system is no different than improving the horse and buggy. The criminal justice system as it exists today was designed based on economic theory. Today, we know far more about sociology, psychology, and the social determinants of both health and behavior. The right solution is to bring brilliant minds who are aware of these issues as well as community members and develop a new system that we gradually shift to that focuses on preventing crime before they occur and responding in evidence-based ways when a crime occurs.

The current system leads to increased crime in both the short-term and long-term. We can and should do better. What is the use of having more knowledge if we do not apply it?

Dr. Jeanine Joy’s Books

Because her work is at the root cause of human thriving, the same strategies that improve health, build resilience, and increase employee engagement also prevent suicide, assist recovery from burnout and mental illnesses.

Silo’d research is the reason the connection between everything is not widely known. It is one of the most important points of her message. Fix one thing and everything improves. Watching this work in practice is exhilarating.

It is mentioned here because sometimes someone who has heard her speak will mention that they are going to buy all her books. Her response always, “Please don’t do that. I plagiarize myself. The same strategies are described in multiple books.

Dr. Joy constantly strives to find ways to explain scientific information and how to apply it in our lives better and with greater clarity. After she tells people not to buy all her books they often ask her which one they should buy. The answer is, “It depends.”

Her most recent book will have the best explanations of the strategies so if your primary goal is to understand how to apply stress management, emotion regulation, and social and emotional learning skills in your life or teach others how to do it, her latest book is the best. Currently, the most recent book is: Mental Wellness Made Easy: The Smart Way to Manage Stress: Emotion Regulation and Stress Management for Everyone

If you are interested in the research supporting a particular area, buy the book that addresses that topic.

She hopes a few books that are in the works are published before or during the Joy Walk. The latest books will not fit in the above paradigm precisely. She has one on goal setting and achievement that will be completely different that will probably be the next one published.
